Cebu City Forms Task Force to Inspect Suspected POGOs

July 31, 2024 Philippines Crime & Legal

The Cebu City government will establish a task force to conduct random inspections of establishments suspected of posing as Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) in the city.

This initiative is in response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s order to end all POGO operations in the Philippines by the year’s end.

Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia announced at a press conference on Monday that the task force will be led by the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) and the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO). He plans to meet with CCPO Director Col. Antonietto Cañete this week to finalize the task force’s formation.

Garcia noted that reports have indicated some call centers or business process outsourcing (BPO) companies might be running POGO-like activities. The task force will investigate all BPO-registered establishments to confirm their legitimacy and ensure no illegal activities are occurring.

Garcia affirmed Cebu City’s commitment to adhering to the President’s POGO ban. He also mentioned that, according to BPLO head Terrence Zaavedra, there are no legally operating POGO entities in the city.
