Regional police chief probed over illegal POGOs in jurisdiction

June 25, 2024 Philippines Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

A regional police chief in Central Luzon is under investigation for accountability over illegal offshore gaming operators in his jurisdiction. Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil announced the investigation following incidents of “unreported killings” in POGO hubs, suggesting they were running “scam farms.” The investigation was launched because these events “were not acted upon properly.”

As a result, the entire roster of personnel at the Bamban, Tarlac Municipal Police Station, the chief of police of Porac, Pampanga, and the director of the Pampanga Police Provisional Office have been relieved of duty. Marbil questioned the deaths of foreigners in these areas, urging a thorough investigation, but did not label the police officers as “protectors” of POGOs.

Another official mentioned authorities linking raided POGO hubs in Central Luzon. Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director Maj. Gen. Leo Francisco noted the ongoing process to apply for a warrant regarding computer data, with results forthcoming.

According to PAGCOR data, only 43 legal POGOs operate in Kawit, Cavite, and Metro Manila. The area faced public scrutiny after a raid on a POGO possibly linked to Bamban Mayor Alice Guo, who has been suspended for grave misconduct.
