Indonesia targets Philippines, Cambodia to curb online gambling

June 24, 2024 Indonesia Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

Indonesia mandates network access point (NAP) providers to block internet lines originating from the Philippines and Cambodia allegedly used for domestic online gambling. This approach mirrors regional efforts targeting ISPs rather than the platforms themselves, aimed at eradicating illegal gaming.

Communications and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi emphasized these measures as part of comprehensive actions against online gambling, enacted through an official Minister’s Letter issued on June 21st. NAP providers have been given a three-day deadline to comply.

The ministry has also removed nearly 3 million pieces of online gambling content from mid-July 2023 to mid-June 2024. Additionally, Indonesia is blocking 555 e-wallets and freezing nearly 5,800 bank accounts, enforced by Bank Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority. Online and offline gambling is strictly prohibited in Indonesia, with penalties including up to 10 years in prison and fines.

Transaction reports indicate significant online gambling activity, with transactions in the first quarter of 2024 totaling approximately $36.4 billion involving an estimated 3.2 million participants.
