Solon calls for passage of Anti-Online Gambling Act amid ongoing e-sabong operations

The Anti-Online Gambling Act is being pushed by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano in response to claims that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s ban on electronic cockfighting, or “e-sabong,” is still in effect.

During a Senate Committee on Games and Amusements hearing, Cayetano brought up the topic of e-sabong’s resurgence. He had previously filed Senate Bill 63, often referred to as the Anti Online Gambling Act, in 2022 in reaction to concerns over e-sabong-related issues and disappearances of cockfighters.

Cayetano emphasized in a statement the temptation of gambling, particularly when it’s done online, and how it might undermine moral values in the country. He expressed concern about online gambling sites like e-Sabong, which have been connected to unfavorable outcomes.

In May 2022, former President Rodrigo R. Duterte issued an order to cease e-sabong activities. The Philippine National Police reports ongoing criminal activity and detains many individuals involved in e-sabotage activities, notwithstanding this directive and President Marcos’ suspension orders issued in December 2022.

The goal of Cayetano’s proposed legislation is to punish anybody who violates the Anti-Online Gambling Act severely, with prison time and fines among other consequences. In addition, it entails taking steps like firing the implicated public employees, permanently excluding them from holding public office, and restricting their ability to vote and participate in elections.
