NSW gov’t appoints new chair for Responsible Gambling Fund

December 21, 2023 AustraliaWorld iGaming & GamblingIndustry Updates

The New South Wales (NSW) government has appointed a new chair of the Responsible Gambling Fund (RGF), Mr. Chris Bertinshaw. In his presence will be two additional trustees. By appointing the three candidates, who possess solid credentials in governance to facilitate effective reform, the government is emphasizing its dedication to mitigating the adverse effects of gaming in the area.

The RGF Trustees are instrumental in recommending the allocation of funds for a variety of initiatives, such as policy assistance, community education, support services, and gambling prevention education. Due to its prominent membership on the government’s Independent Panel on Gaming Reform, the Trust’s input is also vital in the development of gaming legislation.

The government’s dedication to eliminating injury associated with wagering across the entire state was emphasized by the recent appointments of Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris. Contributing to the RGF Trust’s financial support—alongside a casino fee—are efforts by the government to resolve the region’s escalating concerns regarding compulsive gambling.

“The RGF enables New South Wales to support world-leading programs, services, and campaigns to reduce gambling harm in our communities,” said Minister of Gaming and Racing David Harris.

Minister Harris thanked John Dalzell, the departing chair of the RGF, for his exemplary leadership since 2017. Dalzell assumed responsibility for the substantial expansion of the fund-supported education and awareness initiatives, as well as the restructuring of the GambleAware service delivery model. In addition to reiterating the government’s steadfast support, the minister declared that an additional $10 million will be allocated to the RGF between 2023 and 2024.

The recently designated officials, chaired by Chris Bertinshaw, shall remain in their positions for a duration of three years. Bertinshaw, who possesses over three decades of experience in governance and public health, operated as the chief executive officer of multiple organizations and previously presided over the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District Board.

In addition to their substantial expertise, Steven Gal and Anastasia Polites have become members of the Board of Trustees. Gal, who possesses expertise in health and community development, and Polites, who has experience in employment and labor law, are anticipated to make substantial contributions towards the achievement of the RGF’s objective. Anne Fitzgerald, Professor Joel Negin, Robert Lagaida, and the three reappointed trustees will be involved in the collaboration.

These appointments demonstrate the government’s commitment to resolving the gambling issues. With their extensive experience and exceptional leadership qualities, the newly recruited RGF team members are poised to be invaluable assets as the Trust works to reduce the negative effects of wagering on communities and prioritizes the welfare of New South Wales residents.
