Macau tourist arrival stays strong during first half of Golden Week holiday

October 4, 2023 Macau Events & AnnouncementsIndustry Updates

A total of 530,312 guests had arrived in the area throughout the first four days of Macau’s Golden Week vacation, averaging 132,578 per day.

This total includes 133,458 visits from only Monday, which represents a significant 436% growth year over year. It was, nevertheless, a little less than the weekend’s surge of more than 150,000 individuals on both Saturday and Sunday.

For contrast, 974,337 people arrived throughout the whole seven-day Golden Week period in 2019, averaging 131,191 people per day. In comparison, the COVID-affected 2022 saw around 182,000 arrivals, with about 26,000 arriving each day on average.

385,823 of the 530,312 guests that visited during Golden Week 2023 were from mainland China, while 110,990 came from Hong Kong. On Monday, there were 18,882 entries from Hong Kong, a surge of 925%, and 108,279 arrivals from the mainland of China, a phenomenal 385% year-over-year growth.

Due to the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays being on the same week this year, Golden Week is now eight days long instead of the customary seven.

These impressive visitor figures follow the monthly gaming revenue reports, which indicated a drop in September, from Macau’s Gaming Inspection Bureau (DICJ). Due to the Golden Week vacation season, analysts predict that October will have the greatest sales results of the whole year.
