Here’s why Carlos Yulo is grateful to Fil-British gymnast Jake Jarman

Carlos Yulo, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, admitted that fellow gymnast Jake Jarman played a crucial role in his victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics. During his visit to GMA Network, Yulo shared how Jarman’s expertise in the vault helped him secure the gold medal.

Yulo, who was interviewed by Pia Arcangel on the August 20 episode of 24 Oras, recounted their training camp experience. He joined Jarman at his gym in the lead-up to the Paris Games. Jarman, the 2023 World Champion in the men’s vault, imparted valuable techniques to Yulo.

“Yung second vault, nahirapan talaga ako, hindi consistent talaga. So nagpaturo po ako kay Jake, nung nag-training camp po ako. And yeah, nakatulong yung technique niya po talaga,” Yulo said about Jarman, whose mother has roots in Cebu.

The two gymnasts first met around six years ago, when Yulo was about to turn 18. They have since built a strong friendship and have competed together. “Na-meet ko po siya parang 2018, mag-e-18 years old ako. And naka-compete ko siya. And especially, nag-training camp ako sa gym nila,” recounted the Manila-born and raised gymnast.

In Paris, both athletes excelled in the floor exercise, with Yulo winning gold and Jarman taking bronze. They also competed in the vault finals. Jarman scored 15.100 on his first vault and 14.766 on his second, finishing just outside the podium with a score of 14.933. Yulo, on the other hand, scored 15.433 on his first attempt and 14.800 on his second, earning him a total score of 15.116 and the gold medal.

When asked if he thanked Jarman after the ceremony, Yulo humorously responded, “Sabi ko, turuan niya pa po ako.”
