Macau Hits Post-Pandemic Visitor Record with Over 20 Million Arrivals in 2024

August 6, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

Macau has witnessed a remarkable surge in visitor arrivals, surpassing 20 million by August 3, 2024, achieving this milestone two months ahead of last year. According to data from the Public Security Police Force (PSP), this surge culminated in a new post-pandemic daily record of 717,197 border crossings on Saturday, August 3. This figure includes arrivals and departures at various checkpoints, with the Border Gate seeing the highest traffic.

According to multiple media outlets, the PSP noted that 54% of this massive movement occurred via the Border Gate, while Qingmao Port, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, and the Macao Port of Hengqin Border Crossing also saw significant activity. Specifically, 386,714 crossings were recorded at the Border Gate, 105,948 at Qingmao Port, 91,888 via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, and 72,976 at the Hengqin Border Crossing.

This influx of visitors has resulted in an average daily arrival rate of 93,116 so far in 2024, reflecting a 36.1% increase from the same period in 2023 and a recovery to 82.9% of the pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The tourism sector’s rebound is evident as Macau closed 2023 with 28.2 million visitors, representing 71.6% of pre-pandemic levels.

The summer vacation period is traditionally a peak time for travel, and the PSP expects the high volume of arrivals and departures to continue throughout August. The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has set a target of 33 million visitors for 2024, with an expectation of two million international visitors. Deputy Director of MGTO forecasts July alone to account for approximately 3.02 million visitors, averaging over 97,400 daily arrivals, and anticipates hotel occupancy rates potentially reaching 90% or more.

The robust visitor numbers indicate a strong recovery trajectory for Macau’s tourism industry, underscoring the region’s attractiveness as a travel destination. With significant events and holidays in the latter half of the year, including the National Day Golden Week, the target of 33 million visitors appears within reach, signaling a promising end to 2024 for Macau’s tourism sector.
