Feud Erupts Between Carlos Yulo’s Girlfriend and Mother Amid Olympic Triumph

August 6, 2024 Philippines Sports

The celebration of Carlos Yulo’s historic double gold medal at the Paris Olympics has been overshadowed by a public feud between his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, and his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo. The rift, simmering for over a year, has now become the subject of intense scrutiny and speculation on social media.

The tension became evident when Angelica shared a Rappler post lauding Japan’s victory in the men’s gymnastics all-around event, where her son Carlos placed 12th, a significant improvement from his 47th place finish at the Tokyo Olympics. Her post, captioned “Japan pa rin talaga. Lakas” (“Japan is still the best”), garnered over a hundred thousand reactions but notably omitted any mention of Carlos’ achievement. This omission did not go unnoticed, as it sparked comments criticizing her for not acknowledging her son’s success.

Angelica’s behavior has been consistent over the past year, with frequent praises for her other gymnast children, Eldrew and Elaiza, while largely ignoring Carlos. The ongoing feud between Carlos and his mother involves multiple issues, including money and his relationship with Chloe San Jose.

In a statement released during Carlos’ floor exercise win, Angelica vehemently denied allegations of stealing money from her son, claiming instead that Carlos had committed various actions she had chosen to overlook.

The feud intensified when Angelica publicly blamed San Jose for the strained relationship between Carlos and his family. According to Angelica, the discord began during an incident in Tokyo, where Carlos was training. San Jose, who is based in Australia, had joined Carlos in Japan, causing a conflict over sleeping arrangements. Angelica recounted that Carlos’ brother Eldrew and national player Miguel Besana were supposed to stay with Carlos, but the plan was canceled due to concerns about the propriety of the arrangement, as both Eldrew and Besana are minors.

“Patutulugin ko yung anak ko, menor de edad, kasama siya at yung babae? Pangalawa, si Miguel, hindi rin siya papayagan ng parent niya,” Angelica explained in an interview with Bombo Radyo Philippines. (“Would I let my minor son sleep there with her and the girl? Secondly, Miguel’s parents would not allow it.”)

Angelica claimed that Carlos’ former coach, Munehiro Kugimiya, also opposed the arrangement, stating that only athletes should stay in the quarters provided by the Japan Olympic Committee, reimbursed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

“Pagdating pala doon, ang sabi ni coach Mune, dapat pagdating ni Eldrew at yung teammate niya, wala doon sa bahay niya na binabayaran ng JOC na nire-reimburse ng PSC every end of the year,” Angelica recounted. (“When they arrived, coach Mune said that when Eldrew and his teammate arrived, no one else should be in the house paid for by the JOC and reimbursed by the PSC.”)

Angelica also expressed concern that San Jose was distancing Carlos from his family, a sentiment she reiterated in the interview with Bombo Radyo. She acknowledged the challenges posed by the pandemic but felt that San Jose was deliberately keeping Carlos away.

“Nung una, medyo okay kasi tumatawag-tawag siya [Chloe] dito… Feeling ko, nilalayo sa amin si Caloy,” Angelica said. (“At first, it was okay because she [Chloe] would call… But I feel she is taking Caloy away from us.”)

San Jose has promised to respond to Angelica’s allegations but stated she would wait until after Carlos concluded his Paris campaign in the vault finals. In a social media post, San Jose hinted at a forthcoming response, urging Angelica to reopen her comment section, which had been disabled amid the controversy.

“Mother dear, I’m gonna hold your hand when I say this. Pero wait ka lang, tapusin lang po namin ‘yung vault finals – paki-on na your comment section po ah, hindi yung nag-dedelete ka pa + off com sec,” San Jose posted. (“Mother dear, I’m gonna hold your hand when I say this. But please wait, let us finish the vault finals – please turn on your comment section, stop deleting and turning off comments.”)
