SkyCity Auckland Closing Gaming Area for 5 Days in Sept 2024

August 2, 2024 New Zealand Casino & Hotel

New Zealand’s SkyCity Entertainment Group will close the gaming area at its Auckland casino from Monday, September 9, to Friday, September 13, 2024, under a settlement agreement with the Secretary for Internal Affairs over a “continuous play” complaint from a former customer.

Non-gaming attractions, including hotels, attractions, restaurants, and bars outside the gaming area, will remain open as usual during this period, the company explained in a filing.

SkyCity had previously warned that it could face a closure of up to 10 days due to an application for temporary suspension of the casino operator’s license by the Secretary. This application followed a complaint from a former customer who gambled at SkyCity Auckland between August 2017 and February 2021.

Last month, SkyCity acknowledged it failed to meet the requirements of the SkyCity Auckland Host Responsibility Programme (HRP) and its license regarding the detection of continuous play incidents. This failure was due to a design error in a technology system developed by SkyCity to monitor continuous play by carded customers.

SkyCity also admitted it did not exercise the required level of vigilance in using staff observation and intervention to identify and act on incidents of continuous play by the customer.

SkyCity has committed to implementing mandatory carded play across its New Zealand casinos by mid-2025 and at SkyCity Adelaide by the end of 2025.
