Indonesian President Refuses Financial Aid for Online Gambling Participants

June 21, 2024 Indonesia iGaming & GamblingIndustry Updates

Following a contentious proposal addressing social support for their families, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has made it clear that the government will not offer financial assistance to anyone who engage in online gambling.

Since internet gambling is prohibited in the nation, the idea, which was first put out by Coordinating Minister Muhadjir Effendy, attracted controversy.

The decision was made at a time when worries about the effects of online gambling are growing, as seen by a number of tragic recent deaths.

The need of a thorough crackdown on the illicit practice—which is now completely prohibited nationwide—was underscored by President Widodo, who recently announced severe measures against internet gambling.

Widodo spoke to the country on social media, advising prudent money management and advising Indonesians to abstain from all forms of gaming.

Recognizing the risks associated with internet gambling’s global reach, he asked public figures, religious leaders, and individuals to exercise caution and report any instances of it.

The Widodo administration is dedicated to eradicating online gambling as a major issue in preserving public welfare and social order, particularly with the impending handover of power to President-elect Prabowo Subianto in October.
