Philippines Cracks Down on Cybercrime to Protect Booming E-Gaming Industry

May 27, 2024 Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

The Philippines’ expanding iGaming and e-gaming industries are being protected by the government’s increased efforts to prevent cybercrime.

The nation’s first-quarter 2024 Gross Gaming Revenue benefited greatly from these industries as well as from legal online gaming.

Cybercrime, however, jeopardizes this economic potential and erodes public confidence in law enforcement—two factors vital to the industry’s expansion.

The National Cybersecurity Plan (NCSP) 2023–2028, which improves detection, response, and case resolution capabilities, has been approved by President Marcos Jr.

To strengthen data security, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will also make changes to its Cloud First Policy.

Globe Telecom is collaborating with law enforcement to stop the importation of spoofing devices that are used in SMS scams. Globe’s general counsel declared, “We need strong enforcement to prevent the spread of illegal equipment.”

This approach aligns with PAGCOR’s objective to draw investment by lowering the cost of casino licenses, a move that will require strong cybersecurity.
