Christchurch Man Nabbed in NZ’s Largest Illegal Lottery Scam

May 22, 2024 New Zealand Crime & Legal

A man from Christchurch and his company have been accused by the Department of Internal Affairs of operating the biggest-ever illegal lottery in New Zealand.

Authorities claim that the defendants sold unauthorized online lotteries with prizes like expensive cars and boats, making NZ$11.12 million ($6.79 million) over the course of a year.

For lotteries valued at more than NZ$5,000, New Zealand law mandates a Class 3 gaming license in order to guarantee “integrity of operation and participant protection,” as per the DIA.

Police brought accusations against the defendants before the High Court after conducting an investigation.

Charges include running an illegal gambling establishment and promoting it, in addition to sanctions for breaking rules.

Last Thursday, the defendant appeared in court with his business.
