Macau Crackdown: Five Suspects Detained for Fake Casino Chip Scam

May 15, 2024 Macau Crime & Legal

In a major development, Macau’s Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) has announced the arrest of five individuals in a high-stakes casino fraud probe.

The suspects, all mainland Chinese nationals, are suspected of cheating a casino in Cotai with counterfeit casino chips worth HK$10,000 each, totaling HK$1.8 million (US$230,400).

Following their arrest by the Judicial Police (PJ) on May 2, the suspects were transferred to the MP for further investigation.

Preliminary investigations reveal their involvement in “substantial fraud,” a crime punishable by up to ten years in prison.

The MP sought a court order to detain the suspects, citing concerns about their flight risk and the gravity of the crime.

This forceful move aims to prevent further disruptions to public order and economic stability, particularly in Macau’s critical entertainment and gambling sectors.

Highlighting the broader implications of such crimes, the MP cautions residents and tourists to be cautious, emphasizing the importance of promptly reporting suspected fraudulent activities.

Meanwhile, investigators allege that the accused were acting on orders from a mainland crime ring, with three accomplices still evading arrest.

Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining perpetrators and dismantle the criminal network that perpetrated the fraud.
