Thailand Cracks Down on Illegal Gambling Amid Legalization Push

May 2, 2024 Thailand Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

Law enforcement’s crackdown on illegal gambling networks is impeding Thailand’s attempts to legitimate its gaming industry.

Police are cautious in their efforts to halt illicit firms, even in the face of legislative advances.

In a recent assault dubbed as “ZERO BET,” Thai authorities destroyed two subterranean platforms in an effort to combat the underground gambling industry.

Significant amounts of property were seized as a result of the crackdown, including money and high-end items valued at about THB70 million ($1.9 million).

Concurrently, rumors are circulating regarding a potential connection between the police chief and a syndicate involved in gambling.

The Thai Deputy Police Chief, Surachate Hakparn, is facing allegations of money laundering related to illicit online betting networks.

The Royal Thai Police declared their intention to establish an investigative committee to examine Hakparn’s purported connections in response to growing attention.

The country is engrossed in the unraveling mystery, and anticipation is growing for the investigation’s findings, which could be made public as early as next week, according to sources from the Bangkok Post.

Thailand’s attempts to reconcile the legalization of gaming with the fight against illicit gaming groups underscore the challenges facing its expanding regulatory landscape.
