Galaxy’s Lui Che Woo among world’s richest gaming industry operators
The two wealthiest people in the gambling sector are Miriam Adelson, the owner of Las Vegas Sands, and Lui Che Woo, of Galaxy Entertainment Group. They both rank alone in the top 200 on Forbes’ just released 38th annual World’s Billionaires list.
A record-breaking 2,781 billionaires are on this year’s list, up 141 from the previous year. With 14 individuals owning fortunes over $100 billion, these billionaires have a total worth of US$14.2 trillion.
Leading the casino sector is Miriam Adelson, widow of Sheldon Adelson, the creator of Las Vegas Sands, who passed away in 2021. Adelson, who controls over half of the company, is worth US$32 billion, down from US$35 billion the year before, according to Forbes’ list of the world’s billionaires.
The only other member of the gaming sector to make it into the top 200 is Lui Che Woo, chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group, who is worth US$11.2 billion and ranks 180th. In 2018, Dr. Lui, who also owns K. Wah International Holdings in Hong Kong, had a net worth of $20.1 billion.
Notable individuals on the list include Teddy Sagi, the founder of Playtech, at No. 432 with US$6.4 billion, Johan Graf of Novomatic at No. 385 with US$7.1 billion, and Denise Coates, co-CEO of Bet365, at No. 249 with US$9.5 billion.
With a fortune of US$233 billion, Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, topped the World’s Billionaires list in 2024, followed by US$195 billion for Elon Musk.
The United States leads the list with 813 billionaires, followed by China with 473 and India with 200.
