Macau could receive over 100k daily visitors over Easter weekend

March 19, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

Over the next Easter holiday season, Macau is projected to receive “over 100,000” visitor arrivals every day on average, according to Andy Wu Keng Kuong, director of the Macau Travel Industry Council.

This estimate was provided by Mr. Wu to the local Chinese-language newspaper, Macao Daily News.

While Easter is not observed as a public holiday on the Chinese mainland, it is in Macau and the neighboring Hong Kong. Hong Kong has an Easter weekend from Good Friday, March 29, to Easter Monday, April 1.

Hong Kong, Macau, and the Chinese mainland all observe the Chinese holiday Ching Ming as a public holiday after Easter. In mainland China, this holiday is observed from April 4 (Thursday) to April 6 (Saturday); in Hong Kong, it is observed just on April 4.

As said by Ricky Hoi As to Io Meng, the deputy director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Macau’s daily average visitor count has increased to between “70,000 and 80,000”. Yet on Sunday, March 10, Macau had more visitors than “100,000,” according to Mr. Hoi.

The MGTO official anticipates that, like in previous years, Hong Kong will lead Macau’s influx of Easter visitors.

Over the course of the six days from April 5 (Ching Ming) to April 10, the end of Easter, Macau had 481,765 visitor arrivals in 2023. This translated into an average of a little over 80,000 every day.

Between April 19 and April 22, 2019, Hong Kong’s Easter weekend, Macau witnessed around 550,000 visitor arrivals before to the Covid-19 outbreak. Over the course of the four days, this led to an average of around 137,000 visitor arrivals per day.
