Gongbei border checkpoint reopens accommodating up to 350k visitors daily
Last Friday marked the reopening of the recently restored Gongbei border station, which connects Macau with mainland China.
In order to accommodate between 330,000 and 350,000 visitors per day, upgrades have been made to enhance processing capacity by around 10%.
Thirty-two lanes for manual document inspections and 90 lanes for automated document checks come from the renovation, which, according to the local media, enlarged the border area by 50%.
Over 100 million border crossings were registered at Gongbei last year alone, making it widely regarded as China’s largest land-based checkpoint.
Forecasts suggest that Macau, the Asian gambling superpower, would welcome over 33 million visitors this year, with the majority coming via land-based borders. Last year, the resort city welcomed over 28 million tourists.
