The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the messaging app Telegram have decided to collaborate more closely in order to combat fraud and illegal online gaming.

Following a meeting in Dubai, Malaysia’s Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, and Pavel Durov, the inventor and CEO of Telegram, made the decision. The conversation brought attention to the rising concern about scams and illicit gambling activities on the Telegram network, which has over 15 million members in Malaysia.

Telegram’s pledge is seen by the Communications and Multimedia Commission as a significant advancement in addressing cybersecurity issues. The collaboration aims to enhance regulations and increase their efficacy in safeguarding users.

The development of new instruments and procedures for effectively detecting and responding to online threats may also come from this cooperation.

Russian businessmen Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai launched Telegram in 2013 as a private messaging service, but it soon became well-known for its emphasis on encryption and privacy. Although Telegram has developed into a powerful messaging app with features like channels, group conversations, and file sharing, its anonymity, and encrypted messaging capabilities have attracted users who are involved in illicit activities like fraud and gambling.
