Visitors from South Korea have highest spending per capita in Macau

The visitors from mainland China, Thailand, and South Korea spent the most money per person in Macau last year.

Travelers from South Korea paid MOP3,634 ($450) each, followed by Thais who spent MOP3,363 ($417), and tourists from Mainland China who spent MOP3,055 ($378) each person, according to statistics from the Statistics and Census Service.

Additionally, from 2019, the amount spent per person by visitors from Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan increased to $392, $290, and $262, respectively.

Travelers from Taiwan raised their per capita spending by 56% to MOP2,141 ($265), while those from Hong Kong increased it by 22% to MOP1,160 ($144).

In all, MOP2,525 ($313) was spent by each visitor last year, a significant increase of 55.3 percent over 2019.

With gaming excluded, total tourism spending rose by 292% annually to MOP71.25 billion ($8.8 billion) in 2023, an increase of 11.2 percent above 2019 figures.

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) linked the previous year’s notable surge in spending to a 394.9 percent rise in visitor arrivals.

In 2023, spending by overnight tourists climbed by 303% to MOP60 billion ($7.4 billion), while spending by same-day visitors soared by 240% annually to MOP11.1 billion ($1.4 billion).
