Macau welcomes 2,861,609 visitors in January
Macau had 2,861,609 tourists in January, up 104.7% from the same month the previous year and 83.5% from the numbers reported in 2019.
However, according to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), this figure showed a 2.8% decrease from the prior month.
Overnight visits surged by 69.3% to 1,381,511 while same-day visitors increased by 155% to 1,480,098, in comparison to January 2023. In spite of this rise, visitors stayed an average of 1.2 days each year, down 0.4 days annually.
With 2,056,133 visitors in January—a 107.3% rise from the previous year—Mainland China welcomed the majority of visitors. The Individual Visit Scheme had a notable 57.8% rise in arrivals, totaling 1,116,184.
There were notable year-over-year increase rates of 53.0% and 217.6%, respectively, for visitors from Taiwan (59,921) and Hong Kong (546,277).
There were 199,278 foreign visitors in January, which is 66.4% of the total number recorded in January 2019. Visitors from Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia returned to their pre-COVID levels of 86.9%, 93.1%, and 66.2%, respectively, while visitors from the Philippines climbed dramatically and surpassed January 2019 levels.
South Korea accounted for 50.8% of all visitors in Northeast Asian markets in 2019 with 50,552, while Japan accounted for 34.8% with 10,646 visits.
A total of 10,922 US visitors arrived in January 2019, a 66.2% increase from the previous year.
