Macau collects $911 million in gaming tax revenue in January

February 19, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

The Macau SAR Government received gaming tax revenue of MOP$7.34 billion (US$911 million) in January, up 365% from MOP$1.58 billion (US$195 million) in January 2023, according to the Financial Services Bureau (DSF).

This noteworthy improvement is indicative of the strong rebound that Macau’s casino industry has had over the last year after the removal of border restrictions on January 8, 2023. From MOP$42.2 billion (US$5.26 billion) in 2022 to MOP$183.06 billion (US$22.75 billion) in 2023, Macau’s Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) increased by 334%.

The December GGR figure, which was MOP$18.57 billion (US$2.30 billion), a 433% increase over December 2022, is strongly related to the gaming tax revenue for January.

The DSF said that it anticipates gaming tax collections of MOP$83.6 billion (US$10.4 billion) in 2024, accounting for 82% of its total consolidated budget of MOP$102.0 billion (US$12.7 billion), along with the announcement of the tax data for January.

The amount collected in January from gaming taxes makes up 8.8% of the government’s annual gaming tax budget.
