Singapore’s Changi Airport experiences increase in passenger movement
Changi Airport in Singapore handled 58.9 million passengers in 2023, representing a significant increase in passenger volume.
According to Changi Airport Group, this was an 83% rise over the previous year, restoring airport traffic to 86% of pre-COVID levels.
Northeast Asia was a key development engine, with mainland China leading the way as the fastest-growing market, followed by Japan and South Korea. Japan’s passenger traffic doubled from 2022 levels, while South Korea’s rose 36% year on year.
Southeast Asia contributed to the increase by increasing traffic by 72%. Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia are among the top five passenger markets in the globe this year.
Furthermore, North America saw a significant increase that outpaced pre-COVID levels by 25%. South Asia, Europe, and the Southwest Pacific all had more than 90% recovery rates.
December was the busiest month of the year, with 5.8 million passenger movements, 91% more than pre-COVID levels. The biggest day of the year, December 22, had 203,000 journeys.
According to Lim Ching Kiat, EVP for air hub and cargo expansion, 2023 will be a positive year for CAG. This is because international traffic will restart, and Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 will be fully operational. He was optimistic about 2024, believing that Changi Airport’s connectivity and traffic will completely recover to pre-COVID levels.
