Philippine authorities found thousands of fake work visas, many tied to POGOs.
Philippine authorities are currently scrutinizing the issuance of “thousands” of work visas to fictitious companies, including Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). This marks the latest effort in a series of crackdowns on POGO operators, as numerous instances of contract breaches and alleged involvement in human trafficking and extortion have been uncovered.
ABS-CBN reports that the Bureau of Immigration has been directed to thoroughly investigate the matter. However, the bureau itself has faced allegations of misconduct, particularly in providing preferential treatment to specific Chinese nationals.
The authorities have set a deadline for the bureau to complete its investigation by the end of the month.
POGOs have experienced a decline as authorities intensify scrutiny of their operations. Despite providing employment to thousands, there is growing public support for discontinuing their operations due to the perceived negative impact they have on the community.
It’s worth noting that the Philippines is the sole Asian jurisdiction permitting POGO-style operations.
