Macau welcomed nearly 400,000 visitors during New Year’s holiday

January 3, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

The three-day New Year’s holiday period saw a 399,100 rise in visitor arrivals in Macau, according to the Macau Public Security Police Force.

With almost 175,000 visitors on New Year’s Eve, it saw an exceptionally noteworthy total—a new high after the pandemic. The Special Administrative Region (SAR) reported 1.94 million entries and exits between December 30, 2023, and January 1, 2024, including both resident and tourist visits.

New Year’s Eve arrivals rose sharply year over year to reach 175,030, the greatest number of visitors in a single day in 2023. The three-day New Year’s break saw a 543% rise in total arrivals compared to the same time the year before when just 62,000 people came.

Remarkably, during the most recent New Year’s holiday season, the average daily number of visitor arrivals was 133,000, representing a 10% increase over 2019. The two-day holiday weekend in 2019 brought in 241,188 people, on average just over 120,000 each day. The significant rise in New Year’s arrivals indicates that Macau’s tourism industry is rebounding from the negative effects of the pandemic.
