Macau welcomes over 362,600 visitors during Christmas season

The Public Security Police of Macau estimate that 362,600 people visited the city for the three-day Christmas holiday, which took place from December 23 to December 25. Based on preliminary statistics, the daily number of visitors over the Christmas season was around 121,000.

Compared to Macau’s last visitor peak, which fell around China’s National Day in the fall, the daily average for the Christmas season shown resilience. Over the previous holiday season, 116,546 visitors arrived on average per day.

Saturday saw 133,603 visitors, making it the biggest day of the whole Christmas season. Christmas Eve, December 24, saw 120,594 arrivals in Macau; Christmas Day saw 108,446.

Macau’s biggest tourist feeder market, mainland China, does not celebrate Christmas, although Hong Kong, the city’s second-largest tourist destination, does. Since Hong Kong extends its vacation on December 26, a large number of visitors may visit the city.

A breakdown of the different countries of origin of visitors over the Christmas season was not provided by the government. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, which links Macau to mainland China, is the primary entrance for visitors, nevertheless. CEOs in the tourism and gaming industries expected a surge in tourists during the Christmas season, even if southern China’s weather was still relatively chilly.
