Average hotel room occupancy in Macau grows by 41% year-on-year

November 29, 2023 Macau Casino & Hotel

October showed an increase in Macau’s average hotel room occupancy rate of 82.8%, up 41.1 percentage points over the previous year. This figure represents a significant rise over the 78.6% seen in August.

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) reports that the 5-star hotels in Macau attained an even higher rating of 85.6%. Comparing this to the same time last year, there has been a significant growth of 45.4 percentage points. Despite a 19-year increase in the overall number of hotel businesses and a 24.8% increase in rooms to 46,000, the significant improvement in occupancy rates suggests that Macau’s hospitality industry is expanding.

In October, 1,247,000 people stayed in Macau hotels, a 151.8% rise from the same month the previous year. Mainland China had 904,000 visitors, more than any other nation. Hong Kong received 187,000 and Taiwan received 28,000. An average of 1.6 nights were spent there.

According to cumulative statistics, hotel establishments’ average guest room occupancy rate grew to 80.9% in the first ten months of 2023, a year-over-year rise of 43.0 percentage points. While the number of visitors increased overall by 159.9% to 11,041,000, the average duration of stay fell by 0.1 nights to 1.7 nights.

According to the DSEC, 170,000 people landed in Macau on package trips in October, bringing the 10-month total to 914,000. This encouraging growth suggests that Macau’s tourist and hospitality industries will continue to grow.
