Thailand to establish 60-member committee for legalization of casino complexes

October 31, 2023 Thailand Casino & HotelIndustry Updates

A major step has been made by Thailand’s House of Representatives toward the eventual legalization of casino establishments in the nation. They made the decision to form a committee with sixty members to look into this concept. The Bangkok Post said that the group would finish its work in ninety days.

This bill is a follow-up to a similar attempt that the House of Representatives made in December 2021 when it formed a committee to investigate the legalization of several forms of gambling, including casinos. In July 2022, a report was submitted to Thailand’s National Assembly by a group named the “Ad-hoc Committee on the Consideration of the Opening of Entertainment Complex, the Collection of Revenue and Taxes from the Legal Casino, the Prevention and Solution of Illegal Gambling, the Widespread of Electric Gambling Machines, and Online Gambling,” which suggested the establishment of casino resorts.

The committee suggested permitting the construction of “entertainment complexes” with licensed casinos in a number of locations across the nation.

Following the May 14 general election in Thailand that saw the formation of a new House of Representatives, this decision was made. September marked the start of the new government’s tenure, following months of coalition building talks.

Legalizing casino gaming has been a divisive topic in the predominantly Buddhist country of Thailand. A number of neighboring nations in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia, already have established legal gaming industries.
