Jobs in Macau’s casino business increased by 2,500 in the three months prior to September
Data from Macau’s Statistics and Census Service shows that over the three months ending on September 30, the gaming industry hired 2,500 additional workers. This is the second quarter in a row that the industry has grown.
From July to September, there were 71,000 employees in the gaming and junket sector, up 3.6% from 68,500 during the second quarter. Nonetheless, the total workforce in Macau’s gaming and junket industry is far fewer than the high number of 87,500 workers that was documented in the early months of 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Due to the epidemic’s negative impact on business, casino owners were forced to fire hundreds of workers. The employment in this business fell by around 21,000 between April 2020 and September 2021, to approximately 66,400.
Following the removal of travel restrictions connected to COVID-19, the casino industry in Macau began to rehire a significant number of workers. In the six months leading up to September 30, there was a net increase of about 4,600 people employed in Macau’s gaming and junket sector, according to statistics bureau data.
Financial experts following the city’s casino industry have noted that, in an effort to maintain overall headcounts below pre-pandemic levels, management at a number of casino operators plans to limit new hires after COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, operators were able to run their resorts with fewer on-site staff members, and they are now trying to implement some of those cost-cutting and margin-boosting strategies permanently.
