More East Africans fall victim to employment scams in Southeast Asia

More East Africans are becoming victims of Southeast Asian internet employment scams that offer lucrative opportunities.

These prospects are appealing since the average monthly pay in East Africa is $634 and up to 80% of adolescents are jobless. Scammers sometimes make extravagant employment promises, such as $2,098 monthly salaries for sales professionals. Victims pay human traffickers up to $2,791 in some situations, as well as expenses for processing, agency services, and tourist visas. These con games especially target the most vulnerable youth in East Africa.

Victims from Kenya are sometimes tricked into traveling to nations such as Myanmar, where they are coerced into prostitution, work, and internet scams. Human trafficking networks use online employment frauds to trick their victims, forcing them to commit financial violations made possible by cybercrime.

Governments, social media firms to detect and stop fake job postings, and vulnerable groups’ awareness efforts must work together to counter this growing problem. Tech firms are being urged to use more thorough screening procedures in order to identify information linked to human trafficking. Global collaborations are necessary to shield East African adolescents from the increasingly dangerous threat posed by this double-edged crime.
