MGM, Ceasars unlikely to publicly discuss cyberattack anytime soon

October 6, 2023 World Casino & HotelCrime & Legal

According to Gaming Control Board Chairman Kirk Hendrick, the Nevada Gaming Control Board is unlikely to talk about the recent cyberattacks on MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Inc. any time soon owing to continuing police investigations.

In September, the FBI said that it was looking into the intrusions that affected MGM’s computerised systems. A cybersecurity problem also happened at Caesars Entertainment. The investigations are still continuing on even though most of MGM’s systems have already been operational again.

Hendrick said that the Gaming Control Board is now operating as a law enforcement and investigative organization to assist the gaming sector and safeguard the state of Nevada and its residents.

He noted that Nevada Gaming Commission Regulation 5.260, which was established last year, requires certain nonrestricted licensees to create cybersecurity best practises, but it would not be wise to publicly assess the cybersecurity practises or incident response of any specific licensee.

While this was going on, several BetMGM clients expressed frustration on social media about accessing their mobile betting accounts. A BetMGM official recognized the problem but insisted that it had nothing to do with the issues MGM encountered in September and had now been fixed.

In addition, a tenth class action complaint in U.S. District Court in Nevada was filed demanding compensation from MGM or Caesars. According to the complaint, MGM was negligent in failing to stop a hack that led to the theft and release of confidential customer data.

The current case was neither addressed by MGM nor Caesars. Due of their similarity and complexity, legal experts believe that the class-action lawsuits may be combined into a single action.
