Macau’s hotel occupancy rate fell to just 33.3% in August, down 1.1 percentage points year-on-year and significantly lower than the 38.1% rate in July.

The decline came on the back of a 19% year-on-year fall in visitor arrivals, as previously reported by IAG, although the August visitor figure was considerably higher sequentially as border restrictions with mainland China were eased.

According to information from the Macao Government Tourism Office, the occupancy rate of 5-star hotels was 32.0% in August, with 4-star hotels at 39.7% – down 11.2 percentage points on August 2021 – and 3-star hotels at 32.6%, down 4.7 percentage points.

Also falling in August was the average room rate, which declined 10.6% year-on-year to MOP$751.50. This included an 11.2% drop in 5-star room rates to MOP$914, a 13.1% drop for 4-star rooms to MOP$421 and 17.8% drop for 3-star rooms to MOP$440.

For the first eight months of 2022 combined, Macau’s average hotel occupancy rate was down 13.9 percentage points on the same period in 2021 to 37.9%, including a 15.7 percentage point drop for 5-star hotels to 34.2%. The average room rate for the same period was down 18.6% to MOP$720.
