Macau visitor arrivals down 19% year-on-year in August

The number of visitors to Macau declined 19.0% year-on-year in August to 331,397, although the figure was more than 3,000% higher than July when visitor numbers fell to record lows due to an outbreak of COVID-19.

According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the number of overnight visitors increased by 17.5% year-on-year to 177,640 in August, while same-day visitors declined by 40.4% to 153,757.

Due to the tightening of entry and exit pathways to Macau, the average length of stay of overnight visitors increased by 1.5 days year-on-year to 5.4 days. The duration for same-day visitors increased by 0.1 days to 0.2 days, meaning the overall average length of stay of visitors grew by 1.2 days to 2.8 days.

Mainland Chinese visitation fell by 21.5% year-on-year to 290,138, with 124,255 visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme. Visitors from the nine cities in the Pearl River Delta in the Greater Bay Area totalled 184,535, of whom 38.9% came from Zhuhai. There were also 36,205 visitors from Hong Kong and 4,384 from Taiwan.

For the first eight months of 2022, the number of visitor arrivals to Macau fell by 25.8% year-on-year to 3,806,263. This has included a 6.5% decline in same-day visitors to 2,341,772 and 44.2% fall in overnight visitors to 1,464,491.

The average length of stay of visitors decreased by 0.3 days year-on-year to 1.3 days.
