How Much Money People Spend On Gambling Annually

August 18, 2022 China Earnings & FilingsIndustry Updates

When gambling is brought up, flashy pictures of Las Vegas immediately spring to mind. However, contrary to popular belief, gambling is not as popular in America as it is in some other countries in the world. In reality, some of the least suspicious nations are among the greatest gamblers.

Which Countries Spend the Most on Gambling
According to WorldAtlas, Australians bet (and lose) more than any other country per capita. Although most of this money is spent on video poker machines, stricter regulation in recent years has caused the nation to drop to sixth place in absolute spending.

While interactive gaming seems to be preferred by Finns, casino gambling is preferred in Singapore. (Macau does not appear in the rankings as virtually all of its gambling income comes from tourists, most of whom are from mainland China.)

China went from being the tenth-largest market to becoming the second-largest over that time, with losses totaling $76 billion. In the future, according to Simon Holliday of H2GC, China will surpass all other markets in terms of size.

How Much Americans Spend on Gambling Yearly
Although America is still the largest market in the world, in the last ten years its percentage of the market has decreased from almost a third to a quarter. This is in part due to a restriction on the majority of interactive gaming (sports betting and other games played on mobile phones or computers)

In 2021, American consumers spent $147 billion on gambling-related activities, significantly more than in 2019 and 2020. Retail commercial casinos, retail tribal casinos, and retail lottery accounted for the majority of spending, each accounting for 31%. Casinos topped the list when retail and internet were combined, with 62%, followed by lotteries.

According to the research, combined online gaming income made up 7% of the whole industry, up from 5% the year before. When comparing market growth rates, online sports betting came out on top, followed by online casinos and poker.

Online gaming markets in the US are rapidly expanding, Pennsylvania is fairly new to the market, but it has been setting records ever since legalizing online gaming.
