Over 25 pct of workers in Malta foreign nationals

June 20, 2022 World Crime & LegalIndustry Updates

More than a quarter of Malta’s total workforce are foreign nationals, according to the annual report for 2021 published this week by JobsPlus, the state’s employment agency.

The report, tabled in Parliament, said the proportion of foreign workers stood at 27.9 percent in September 2021, equaling almost 78,000 people.

It said that non-Maltese people have been the largest contributors to the growth of the country’s labor force and have also contributed significantly to its overall economic performance.

JobsPlus said the non-Maltese component of the labor force produced the fastest average annual growth rates between 2017 and 2021. Whereas the Maltese cohort increased by 1.2 percent each year on average, the respective figure for the non-EU national cohort was 31.4 percent. The number of European Union (EU) nationals working in Malta increased on average by 3 percent annually during this period.

As a result, the share of non-EU nationals in the labor force has continued to increase over the years, exceeding the number of EU nationals working in Malta.

It said that the figures in several sectors are significantly above this average, most notably in the gambling and betting sector, where 58.6 percent of the workforce are non-Maltese.
