Here’s Why Gongzi Casino Suspended Operations in Jeju Island
Gongzi Casino, located on Jeju Island in South Korea, has officially suspended its operations as of Sunday, November 3, 2024. This closure comes as the hotel hosting the casino, the Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Jeju Ocean Front, prepares for a major refurbishment and rebranding scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
Officials from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province confirmed the shutdown as well as a staff member at the Ramada hotel. In a phone call with GGRAsia, a Jeju government official pointed out that the temporary suspension would not affect the casino’s license, as local rules allow for this type of suspension. During this period, the operator has opted to not relocate the casino.
The suspension of operations at Gongzi Casino, a foreigner-only gambling establishment, is a direct result of the hotel’s closure for renovations. Jeju government officials have stated that this pause in operations is considered a “proper reason” under the island’s licensing regulations, which means that Gongzi Casino’s gaming license will remain active at least until the hotel reopens following its refurbishment.
This temporary closure not only affects Gongzi Casino but also changes the competitive landscape on the island. The count of foreigner-only casinos in Jeju has now temporarily reduced from eight to seven. While it is unclear whether Gongzi Casino will resume operations, industry observers are intently watching the outcome as Jeju is a popular gaming destination for foreign tourists.
Both the hotel’s transformation and the casino’s eventual return could impact its future business position and possibly drive further interest in the casino scene on the island.
It is still uncertain whether Gongzi Casino will return to the Ramada Plaza once the hotel’s renovations are completed. The casino’s gaming license will remain valid, as long as it operates within the jurisdiction of the Jeju authorities, which regulate gaming and tourism on the island.
Gongzi Casino has garnered a modest following, with data from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism showing that Gongzi Casino’s gaming revenue for 2023 amounted to KRW1.19 billion (US$863,200). The casino also recorded 4,129 unique players last year, a testament to its appeal among international visitors to Jeju Island.
