Leyte Rep Richard Gomez Proposes Solution to Track Illegal POGOs

July 19, 2024 Philippines Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez has proposed a straightforward strategy to combat the clandestine operations of illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs): monitor data and internet usage in specific areas.

During a recent hearing held by the House Committees on Public Order and Safety and on Games and Amusements, Gomez proposed a potential method to pinpoint the locations of these hidden enterprises amid troubling allegations. The committee convened to scrutinize shocking video evidence showcasing the brutal treatment of workers within these illegal POGO hubs, further compounding the urgency of the investigation.

The inquiry delved into a web of illegal activities, including torture and illegal detention, reportedly taking place behind closed doors within these underground gaming operations. Recognizing the challenges law enforcement faces in identifying these operators, Gomez suggested a proactive approach involving telecommunications companies.

“At second, itong mga Internet providers Mr. Chair, may mga receivables ito by the millions, by the hundreds of millions for using their services. Maniningil ‘yan, so alam natin specifically if we will ask for the coordinates, malalaman mo eksakto saan pumupunta ‘yong linya nila.”

The suggestion made by the former movie star was approved by House committee on public order and safety chairperson and Santa Rosa City Rep. Dan Fernandez. Gomez’s proposal underscores a growing concern among lawmakers about the safety and legality of gaming practices in the Philippines.
