Australia Bans Credit Cards and Crypto for Online Betting
Australia is stepping up its efforts to combat online gambling by imposing new limitations on the use of credit cards and virtual money for betting.
This includes digital wallets, Bitcoin, credit cards, and other cryptocurrencies.
By matching online limits to those of physical casinos—where credit cards are already prohibited—the modification seeks to reduce financial risks and encourage responsible gaming. Online lotteries are unaffected, though.
Concerned that vulnerable people may choose to less regulated options, advocacy organizations like Responsible Wagering Australia want the government to expand the ban to lotteries.
On June 11th, the ban went into force, and those that did not comply would face severe penalties.
In addition, the government is researching further ways to reduce the negative effects of gaming and may phase out gambling promotion.
