“POGO Mayor” Faces Suspension as Government Moves to Revoke Police Control

The Philippine government is attempting to curtail the authority of the troubled “POGO Mayor,” Alice Guo, and she is dealing with two blows.

To avoid interfering with ongoing investigations into suspected connections to illegal offshore gaming enterprises (POGOs), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) took away her supervisory authority over local police.

Guo’s suspension was requested by the DILG in a separate request to the Ombudsman due to “grave misconduct and negligence.”

This follows a Senate probe on her possible involvement in two illegal POGOs and concerns over her background.

Guo, the first female mayor of Tarlac’s Bamban, maintains that her connections to China are solely for business. She denies any wrongdoing.

But a report from the DILG on May 17th revealed “troubling findings,” raising the stakes for the mayor under siege.
