Number of Macau employees in gaming industry down by 3,600 q-o-q

As per the latest data released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the quantity of Macau citizens working in the gaming and junket sectors decreased by 3,600 every quarter during the three months that concluded on December 31, 2023, totaling 67,400.

Macau’s overall unemployment rate in the fourth quarter was 2.3%, with 2.9% of the local population unemployed and 1.4% underemployed.

There were 8,600 unemployed persons in Macau at the time, and the majority of them had come from the hotel, restaurant, and retail, as well as the gaming and gaming junket businesses.

Of the 371,100 employed individuals in the fourth quarter of 2023, 286,100 were locals. Of these, 67,400 worked in gambling and gaming junket activities; this is a decrease of 3,600 employees, or almost 5%, from the previous quarter.

For the whole employed population in Macau in the fiscal year 2023, the annual unemployment rate was 2.7%; for residents, it was 3.4%; these figures represented 1.0% and 1.4% decreases, respectively.

The median monthly employment salaries were MOP$17,500 (US$3,307) for the whole employed population and MOP$20,000 (US$3,780) for local employed residents. These figures indicate increases of MOP$2,500 (US$311) and MOP$1,000 (US$124) year over year, respectively.
