January 24, 2024 Macau Casino & Hotel

According to figures from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, gross gaming revenue (GGR) from slot machines in Macau reached MOP10.92 billion (US$1.36 billion) in 2023, accounting for around 6.0 percent of the total MOP183.06 billion recorded for the year.

This is a recovery to 72.1% of the level recorded in 2019, the final trading year before the early 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2023, Macau had 12,000 slot machines, down from 17,009 in 2019. The average amount of money produced by a slot machine in 2023 was MOP909,583, slightly more than MOP890,000 per unit in 2019.

In August 2022, the Macau government released new gambling legislation that authorized up to 12,000 gaming machines at any one time, but only 6,000 gaming tables. These constraints, as well as the new 10-year gaming concessions, took effect on January 1, 2023.

According to the Chief Executive dispatch, each gaming machine has a maximum annual gross revenue restriction of MOP300,000, and each gambling table has a minimum annual gross revenue limit of MOP7 million. In 2014, the largest gross gaming revenue per machine was recorded, with each unit generating over MOP1.11 million, or MOP14.44 billion.
