DOT announces gov’t commitment to upskill hotel, tourism workers

Secretary Christina Frasco has pledged a greater government investment in the development of human capital, with an emphasis on upskilling initiatives and programs like the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence.

According to the secretary of the Department of Tourism, the government agency has effectively educated 100,000 Filipino workers under this plan, assuring a continued increase in the quality of tourism services for both local and foreign visitors, according to Frasco, who made this announcement during the 9th Virtus Awards, which were presented by the Hotels Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA).

HSMA Chair Margarita Munsayac emphasized the challenges hotels face in managing operational concerns, budgetary constraints, and labor shortages in addition to adapting to evolving visitor preferences, tastes, and expectations.

This year, the nation’s tourism ministry, the DOT, plans to bring in 4.8 million foreign tourists. Based on statistical data, the number of foreign visitors to the Philippines during the first ten months of 2023 was almost 4.1 million. The government’s focus on developing human capital is a calculated move to meet the growing needs of the tourism sector and enhance the overall traveler experience.
