International tourists currently account for around 5% of all visits to Macao, according to Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, head of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO). According to her, although the growth in international tourists started slowly this year, it accelerated in the second half.
Foreign immigrants made up over 10% of all arrivals before to the outbreak, but they now make up just approximately 5%. Fernandes said that overseas travel will take time to recover and that the number of flights is still below pre-pandemic levels. She did emphasise that the situation in Macau had substantially improved since the beginning of the year.
According to Fernandes, more than 197,000 Filipino guests have visited Macau as of September. According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), there were 129,323 foreign tourists in Macau in August, with the Philippines supplying the most visitors with 26,722 arrivals.
