Taiwan 7th favored destination for Asia Pacific travelers: Mastercard

June 14, 2023 Taiwan Events & Announcements

Taipei, June 13 (CNA) Taiwan ranked the seventh most popular destination to visit for travelers from the Asia Pacific region in a report released by Mastercard Tuesday.

According to the Travel Industry Trends 2023 report, Taiwan first entered the top 10 destinations for Asia Pacific travelers in February in seventh place and retained the position in March.

The report, released by the Mastercard Economics Institute, showed Australia to be the most favored destination among Asia Pacific travelers, ahead of the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

After Taiwan, Canada came in eighth, followed by Indonesia and Thailand, the report said.

“Across the Asia Pacific, rapid urbanization, technological advancements, and a burgeoning middle class contribute to the rise in outbound tourism,” the report said. “This growth is further fueled by the proliferation of low-cost carriers, improved visa policies, and an increasing emphasis on experiences and adventure travel.”

“As a result, Asia Pacific travelers are eager to explore regional and international destinations, creating diverse opportunities for the travel industry,” the report added.

Citing the report, Eva Chen (陳懿文), general manager of Mastercard Taiwan, said the reopening of China amid COVID-19 has also benefited the global tourism industry.

“China’s reopening following tight COVID regulations comes at a time when it will likely have a positive impact on the experience economy as pent-up demand for travel is expected to drive strong tailwinds,” the report said.

In addition, Chen said, with more and more enterprises resuming offline working in the post-pandemic era, physical meetings pushed up demand for business traveling.

In addition, travelers showed a trend in which they tend to pursue unique traveling experiences rather than buy durable goods during their trips, Chen added.

In a survey conducted by Mastercard from May 16-30 to shed light on Taiwan’s tourism market, 43.4 percent of 1,000 respondents aged 20-65 in Taiwan, who were frequent travelers, said they have taken outbound trips since the country eased its border controls, starting in the fourth quarter of last year.

According to the survey, 93.1 percent of Taiwanese respondents said they plan to go overseas over the next year, while 42.5 percent said they are planning to increase the frequency of overseas trips and increase the number of days spent traveling in the future.

Due to rising inflation worldwide, the survey found, 35.3 percent of respondents agreed that their traveling expenses rose by more than NT$10,000 (US$326) compared with the pre-pandemic era, while 28.6 percent said they adjusted their traveling plans accordingly, such as avoiding the peak seasons, cutting spending on lodging and scaling back shopping in order to reduce costs.
