Package tour visitors to Macau increased by 225% year-to-May

Data issued on Wednesday by the city’s Statistics and Census Service shows that inward package tour visitors to Macau surpassed 928,000 in the first five months of 2024, a 225.3 percent rise from the same time last year.

Macau’s major source of tourists, mainland Chinese nationals, increased by 198.5 percent year over year to 828,000 visits between January and May.

The number of foreign tour visitors increased by 1,404.3 percent to 88,000, with the highest percentage increases coming from South Korea (37,000) and India (10,000), at 2,741.6 and 3,517.7 percent, respectively.

242,000 people went on package tours in May alone, an increase of 187.3 percent from the same month last year. Of these arrivals, 219,000 were from mainland China, accounting for 90.5 percent of the total.

Package tour sales to foreign countries increased by 522.2 percent annually to 18,000 travelers. in May, with India (4,000) and South Korea (7,000) in the lead.

According to official data, the total number of visitors arriving in Macau in May increased by 21.6 percent year over year to a little over 2.69 million. This amount corresponds to 79.3% of the May 2019 visitation totals prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The May total increased sequentially from April’s 2.60 million by 3.5 percent.

Furthermore, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms in Macau reached 83.6 percent, up 4.9 percentage points from the previous year. The statistics office reports that occupancy rates at 4-star hotels (79.7 percent) and 5-star hotels (85.3 percent) increased by 2.6 and 6.4 percentage points, respectively.

The city’s average guest room occupancy rate increased by 7.7 percentage points annually in the first half of 2024, reaching 84.3 percent.
