Philippines Tightens Foreign Worker Screening After POGO Raids

June 20, 2024 Philippines Industry Updates

For foreign employees applying for Alien Employment Permits (AEPs), the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is strengthening its screening protocols.

This follows earlier investigations into illegal Philippine offshore gaming organizations (POGOs) that turned up overseas employees using fictitious or inappropriate documentation.

According to Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma, “we’re tightening scrutiny beyond document checks.” “Regional offices are conducting inspections, especially in Metro Manila where AEP applications are concentrated.”

The goal of the action is to prevent foreign hiring from taking the position of skilled Filipino workers.

To change the processes for issuing AEPs, DOLE is collaborating with other organizations like the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

For licensed internet gaming licensees (IGLs), PAGCOR now forbids work-from-home arrangements in an effort to curtail illegal activities. DOLE will conduct an inspection to ensure adherence.

The Philippines is determined to control the internet gambling market and safeguard Filipino workers, as seen by this measure.
