Southeast Asia Online Gambling Booms, But Regulation Lags
Experts at SiGMA Manila spoke on the flourishing online gambling market in Southeast Asia, highlighting both its huge potential and a crucial obstacle: regulation.
Industry specialists Alex Czajkowski (PlayersToday), Michael Charlton (Entain Group), and Bhavesh Parthi (Oppa Asia) were on the panel, which was chaired by Andrei Beu of Gamingtec.
Topics covered included payment methods, product localization, and the role of artificial intelligence in games.
Czajkowski talked about how quickly the area was growing and how Southeast Asian gaming businesses like Pragmatic Play and Jilly were becoming more and more popular. But the biggest obstacle, according to him, is regulation.
Charlton emphasized the need for regulation in order to lessen the negative consequences of an unregulated industry.
Even though great programs take time to implement, he suggested that a government’s commitment may pave the way for them.
In support of regulated gaming, Parthi emphasized its benefits, which include tax revenue for social services.
He did point out that there is now no political backing for these regulations in Southeast Asia.
All panel members agreed that rules are essential to the long-term prosperity of the area.
It’s interesting to note that they think that a strong nation like Japan, with a well-regulated online gambling market, will inspire other nations to follow suit.
