187 Rescued in POGO Raid, Rekindling Ban Debate

June 7, 2024 Philippines Crime & Legal

When Philippine police raided an offshore gaming business (POGO) in Pampanga, 187 international and Filipino laborers were saved.

Claims of torture served as the impetus for the attack, which was directed at the “Lucky South 99” facility in Angeles City. 158 citizens of China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Burma, and Korea were among those who were saved.

This incident rekindled the debate about POGOs, which are now called IGLs. Senator Risa Hontiveros advocates for an all-encompassing ban, referencing the cases of saved laborers and ongoing inquiries into illicit activities within the sector.

She is hoping that a unified strategy to address these issues will be suggested by the National Security Council.
