Philippines Suspends “POGO Mayor” Alice Guo Amidst Illegal Gambling Allegations
Alice Guo, the “POGO Mayor” of Bamban, Tarlac, the Philippines, may be suspended following the Ombudsman’s finding of “sufficient grounds” for her involvement in an illicit Philippine Offshore Gaming Operation (POGO).
This action affects two additional officials and comes in response to a recommendation from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). All are charged with misbehavior, deceit, and duty neglect.
A covert POGO that takes advantage of employees at the Baufo Land Development facility is the source of the controversy. Citing land deals and financial activity, the authorities suspect Guo of being involved in the conspiracy. Red flags were raised because Guo allegedly continued to support the POGO despite regulatory actions against them.
The suspension was praised by Senator Risa Hontiveros, a POGO opponent. Citing worries about national security and public welfare, she stressed the established connections between Guo and the POGO.
Though he supports an evidence-based defense, Guo’s attorney, Alex Avisado Jr., questions the suspension.
The fight against criminal activity and the importance of accountability in upholding the rule of law are highlighted by this case. Investigations persist, and the pursuit of justice and truth has an impact on public trust as well as governance.
