Dutch Authorities Crack Down on Online Gambling with Real-Time Monitoring and Limits

June 4, 2024 Netherlands Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

With the revision of the Responsible Gaming Policy Rule, the gaming regulator for the Netherlands, KSA, is extending its jurisdiction over internet gambling.

Two important aspects are highlighted by this new regulation: financial deposit limitations and real-time surveillance.

Online casinos need to implement policies to keep an eye on player behavior at all times, and they should do so right now.

This allows for quick action (within an hour) in the event that signs of compulsive gambling or potential addiction are found.

Furthermore, age-based deposit limitations are established under the regulation. The monthly maximum deposit for young persons (18–24) will be €300, while those over 24 can deposit up to €700. Providers are required to assess affordability prior to taking larger deposits.

This recommendation stems from issues raised in a September 2023 KSA report that emphasized the inadequate intervention methods used by certain providers.

It aligns with new restrictions on advertising, like the prohibition on using celebrities to promote video games.

The majority of actions are immediate, however some changes to the deposit limit will take effect on October 1st, 2024, to give operators time to adjust.

This follows the KSA’s recent prohibition on celebrity promotion and crackdown on illicit gaming machines. Through these cooperative efforts, the Netherlands hopes to foster a safer online gaming environment.
